ASBSD Board approves resolutions, positions

Board members endorsed a slate of legislative resolutions and standing positions during the ASBSD Board of Directors Meeting August 8 in Sioux Falls.

A total of 16 legislative resolutions and eight standing positions will be forwarded to the Delegate Assembly on November 21, where school board members from throughout the state will solidify ASBSD’s advocacy platform for the 2009 legislative session.

Board members and administrators from member districts will receive a copy of the proposed resolutions in September, and they will be formally unveiled and open for input at the ASBSD Region Meetings in late September and early October.

Board members selected to be official ASBSD Delegates will receive the information again as part of the Delegate Assembly packet, which will be sent out prior 45 days prior to Delegate Assembly.

The policy statements were drafted by the five-member ASBSD Policy and Resolutions Committee, a group that works on legislative advocacy throughout the year.

The committee uses both informal and formal feedback from members, their experience as local board members and past resolutions as a guide. The sub-committee also follows education policy trends to anticipate new and emerging issues that may need to be addressed.

In other business, the board:

  • Reviewed the recently completed ASBSD and SASD Annual Convention, saying they believed it was the best convention the association has ever offered.
  • Reviewed an Alliance for Education funding proposal.
  • Formed a nominating committee to replace the recently resigned ASBSD second Vice President.
  • Approved a new ASBSD 403(b) service.
