Board hears legislative proposals

The ASBSD Board of Directors approved a preliminary legislative platform at their August meeting, adopting the recommendations of a subcommittee established to refine ASBSD resolutions and standing positions.

First vice-president Duane Alm, chair of the Policy and Resolutions Committee, presented a collection of 15 resolutions and six standing positions. The group worked for five months to assemble the recommendations.

After a lengthy discussion, the board gave ASBSD staff the go-ahead to present the resolutions and standing positions at the October region meetings to gather feedback from the membership.

After signing off on the proposed platform, the board heard a legislative proposal from ASBSD Southeast Region Director Darin Daby, a Sioux Falls board member.

The legislation, a product of Sioux Falls'' work with their local business community and area legislators, seeks to increase the base per-student allocation by 4.25 percent.

The board commented that the proposal fit into the recently discussed platform, but took no final action. Daby said the legislation would also be presented to the Alliance for Education.
