Keynote Speakers - Associated School Boards of South Dakota

The ASBSD and SASD Convention is proud to offer members a variety of top-tier education keynote speakers that address the very issues that school board members and school administrators encounter every day in their local districts.

After a power-packed event last year, we're proud to offer our members two dynamic keynote speakers based on this year's theme: The Promise of Public Education. In addition to the two speakers, this year ASBSD will host a gubernatorial debate featuring the two top candidates competing to become South Dakota's next governor.

Mike Schmoker
A former administrator turned author and consultant, Mike Schmoker will open convention Thursday morning. His keynote, titled From ‘Brutal Facts' to the Best Schools We've Ever Had, addresses and confronts the “brutal facts” about those practices which educators know are important but which have yet to occur in classrooms.

Schmoker will follow-up his presentation with a 90-minute break-out session titled Results: the Essential Elements of Improvement. Participants will leave the interactive workshop with simple tools to immediately improve learning.

In response to member requests, ASBSD and SASD have created a special registration option that will allow teachers to attend only the Mike Schmoker keynote and break-out session. For more information, visit the registration page.

Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch

Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch, a retired Army Lt. Colonel, is quickly earning a reputation as one of the best leadership speakers in the country. Her keynote, titled The Power of One, tracks her journey from poverty and illiteracy to become the highest ranking Hispanic woman in the Combat Support Field of the U.S. Army. The emotional and inspiring tale is rooted in an unwavering gratitude to public education.

Kickbusch will also facilitate a 90-minute break-out session titled Servant Leadership: A New Call to Duty. During the small-group session, school board members and administrators will learn why the most successful companies in the nation - the NFL, Wal-Mart, Verizon - are calling on Kickbusch to share her 20-point leadership framework.

2010 Gubernatorial Debate

South Dakota will elect a new governor this November. Join us at the ASBSD and SASD Convention to hear Lt. Governor Dennis Daugaard and Sen. Scott Heidepriem debate K-12 education issues. Attendees will get an opportunity to ask questions and hear the two top contenders for governor respond. The event will take place Thursday night, and will be taped by SDPB and broadcast statewide on TV, radio and the web.

2010 U.S. House Forum

With Congress set to reauthorize the nation's signature education law, join ASBSD and SASD for a U.S. House Candidate Forum where school board members and administrators will have a chance to hear how U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin and S.D. Rep. Kristi Noem view the federal government's role in K-12 education. The event will take place Friday morning.
