JOAN WODISKA, NATIONAL GOVERNORS ASSOCIATION

As the chief education policy lobbyist for the National Governor's Association, Mrs. Wodiska is deeply involved in shaping federal education policy. But what makes her unique is the fact that she also serves on her local school board and as president-elect for her state school board association. The South Dakota native will share her unique insights on how federal and state policy influence local school board decisions.

LISA SORONEN, NATIONAL SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION

As a senior staff attorney for the National School Board's Association, Mrs. Soronen is one of the nation's leading experts on school law. In addition to her first-hand knowledge of national school law and regulatory trends, she keeps a close eye on court cases across the country and works with NSBA staff to advocate for public schools through the filing of friend-of-the-briefs at the appeals level.  

BRUCE HUNTER, AASA

Bruce Hunter serves as Associated Executive Director for Advocacy and Public Policy for the American Association of School Administrators. A long-time veteran of federal policy-making, Mr. Hunter has promoted the views of school administrators during every ESEA and IDEA reauthorization since 1982. He'll travel to South Dakota to give convention-goes a thorough update on the direction of developments on ESEA reauthorization and other education policy.

MILLARD PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NEBRASKA

When a student opened fire in the administrative offices at Millard South High School, killing an assistant principal and eventually himself, and wounding the principal, residents in Millard and the entire City of Omaha felt shocked and deeply saddened. How could this happen here? Millard School District’s comprehensive response helped the community come together to heal.
MELODY SCHOPP, SOUTH DAKOTA EDUCATION SECRETARY

South Dakota Education Secretary Melody Schopp will bring her extensive knowledge of South Dakota education policy to convention, leading two presentations on the new teacher standards recently adopted by the South Dakota Board of Education. Mrs. Schopp, who served three terms on the Lemmon School Board, will also speak during the ASBSD and SASD Awards Banquet.
